darone sassounian: synthetic instincts
We’re happy when a new name comes along our endless streams of new releases and it fits right in into a sentiment or a specific groove and moment. It doesn’t mean that the name is necessarily new, and that is the case of Darone Sassounian, but it’s new for us and his music some of the highest-karat-gold deepness we’ve heard in some time. A Los Angeles-based DJ, producer, and label head for Rocky Hill, blending influences from disco, soul, jazz, and international sounds. Dropping tomorrow, Synthetic Instincts is his deepest milestone to date. Accompanied by textured chords, harmonies, and classic sampler work, Sassounian offers a hypnotic and soul-caressing journey. Forward motion with a touch of history meant to move you, whether it is physically, mentally, or emotionally.
This deeply personal project delves into themes of loss, grief, and hope, offering a poignant reflection on the human condition - “a translation of the darkness that we endure together”. Sassounian creates a rough-sounding, nite-groovin’, neon-lit soundscape that draws us in immediately. The music is both soothing and challenging, inviting introspection and emotional connection that could also work well at any given time in the dance-floor. Synthetic Instincts is an incredible debut album from Darone Sassounian and an invitation to explore his previous releases. Available on vinyl, via Rocky Hill.
