The talent of Belgian singer-songwriter and producer Roselien, also known as Rosie From The Block, came alive in her Phuture Shock Musik debut last year with the Believe In It EP. Last friday it was the chance for us to take a dip into the newly released Remixes EP, in which some of our favorite producers reinterpret the tracks included in the originals record, including Sean McCabe and Trinidadian Deep, along with nu-skool bruk soldiers Sentinel 793 and Szajna. Released on Bristol-based label Phuture Shock Musik, one of the best broken-beat-oriented labels out there, Believe In It (Remixes) EP is a testament to the artist's growing popularity in the broken beat scene.
Opening up the EP, Trinidadian Deep adds his signature afro-deep sound to “Believe In It”. The track features Rosie's soulful vocals in a deep sea of celestial melodies and sweeping pads, along with lively percussive rhythms that transform it into a tribal roller with a message of self-belief. Hailing from Manchester, Szajna takes a minimalist and approach with his flip of “Let The Drum”. He strips the track down to a minimal groove of off-kilter drums and squelchy bass, with snips of the original vocal hook intertwined with silky keyboard stabs, making it an understated bruk-hop bop. Bristol-based Sean McCabe delivers an epic revamp of “Same Road Back Home”, retaining the late-night melancholy of the original while adding emotive chords and dazzling synth solos paired with a warm, bouncy Moog b-line and steady 4/4 drum track. Wrapping up the package is Sentinel 793's take on the title-track. Stepping away from familiar bruk territory, he morphs the track into a leftfield bass rattler, where Rosie's vocals drift into oblivion and collide with a tapestry of warped 90s-inspired pads, punchy kicks, and glitchy, industrial-esque percussion.
Available on vinyl this record conveys a duplicity of value for us. On one hand it celebrates the talent of an up and coming artist, on the other it just provide the highest quality of grooves from some of the best. Don’t miss out.
