sampology: regrowth

Originally from Brisbane, Sampology is a producer, DJ, radio host and vinyl music enthusiast. Having grown up in an artistic family, Sam's entire journey naturally took him to the album he is now about to release. After weekends of singing in a church choirs, an adolescence where we discovered vinyl and love of samples, Sampology has progressed organically over the past six years, becoming a talented producer - having released the EP's in his own name. Natural Selections (2016) and Mt Glorious (2018), as well as composing for other artists. Talent, hard work and inspiration are the basis for his current status in the Brisbane music community, which has recently led to Gilles Peterson’s invitation to join the Worldwide FM, and host a fantastic monthly show on the British station.

Next Friday, via Middle Name Records, Sampology releases Regrowth - an album that follows the experiences of the last two EP's. Despite his love for sampling, all the samples you hear on the album are either recorded from scratch on his home studio, or are collected on trips he's taken over the past four years. Regrowth is a complete album, which fills the soul with warm and organic textures. It has string quartets, woodwinds, twenty-voice choirs, vibraphones, basses, various pianos and synthesizers. People like Allysha Joy, Seven Davis Jr, James Chatburn, Silent Jay and renowned Brisbane instrumentalists fill this project with musicality. That musicality is complex, but easy to listen to, despite being impossible to define in a single genre. This is, by the way, a difficult task to do with Sampology. As an artist, his influences are wide and varied - starting with his local music scene, which is rife with jazz alumni breaking rules along with electronics producers, to the readings of philosophers and environmentalists around him. All is reflected in this work. Most of Regrowth was written and recorded during the Australian wildfires in the summer of 2019, and the album's title came from a reflection on the environment during that time. Available in vinyl, this is a great record for the summer that is ending soon.
