divorce from new york: sausalito

Francisco Espregueira

Following up on the acclaimed 2021 offering This Ain’t Jazz No More, Spanish producer Divorce From New York (a.k.a. Álvaro Granda) pairs up with London-based High Praise imprint to present a brand new LP entitled Sausalito. Much like its predecessor, Granda is able to create a rich web of broken beat flavours, uplifting sonics and syncopated rhythms - melding elements of jungle, house and bruk with jazz sensibilities. All wrapped up in unconventional and crunchy melodies that cement his status as one of the most interesting artists in the European independent music scene. While the stage was set by This Ain’t Jazz No More, Divorce From New York’s new work is a bold and potent sophomore release.

Featuring seven brand-new and flavour-packed tracks, Sausalito is an uplifting and joyous listen from start to finish. Immersing himself in his extensive collection of jazz, soul and disco vinyl, Álvaro channels golden sunshine-injected influences into a wonderfully cohesive and infectious record. There’s touches of disco music in “Last Ray Of Sunset”, that features long-term collaborator Piek, conveying a meeting with jaunty, MPC- driven drums, and an irresistible bassline. There’s celestial rhodes and flute flourishing within syncopated bruk-beats in “Holly Grove”. Hypnotic saturated percussion work, swirling vocals and reverb-laced key stabs in “I Haven’t Recovered From Last Night With You” grabbing our attention from the start. The singles released until will give you a solid glimpse of the work that is coming out in a few days. With a range of styles and influences Sausalito takes us on a dancefloor leaning journey from sun drenched rhythms through to detroit-techno esque programming that fills our hearts with warmth. Dropping on August 12th, Divorce From New York’s new album will be available on vinyl. For the collectors, courtesy of High Praise.
