felipe gordon: a landscape onomatopeya lp

Francisco Espregueira

Felipe Gordon’s output is something that we must define first as being outstanding, and second as being prolific - especially since 2018, from when he started to release impressive EP’s, one after the other. We’ve heard him in his own label Nómada Records, Flat White Records, Quintessentials, Razor N Tape, Toy Tonics, Lost Palms, Local Talk… Now Gordon returns to Shall Not Fade, following The Bacatá Extrapolation and the joint project with Cody Currie, to drop his second album (the first was the 2016 Sample Colossus) entitled A Landscape Onomatopeya. Always in constant evolution, exploring different approaches in his sound, Felipe Gordon’s sophomore LP is the confirmation (that we didn’t need) of his killer skills in producing duties.

Throughout 12 tracks, Gordon refreshes us with electronic music that ventures away from the machine in favour of the organic touch. His ability to blend complex jazz instrumentation with acid-licked basslines, golden-age house aesthetics and the cultural sounds of South America is particularly evident, creating a distinctive, beautiful and exciting house record all the way from his home in Bogotá. A Landscape Onomatopeya is a statement and an ode to the Latin American house scene, filled with an indescribably feeling of a mysticism that is present in every single track. It seems that we are always saying this lately, but this is another defining record for 2021. Crafted through using a painting concept, A Landscape Onomatopeya explores shades, different tones and the use of light. Felipe Gordon is a master in doing that, arguably achieving his best work to date. This one is mandatory - vinyls, with different collectors choices, are available courtesy of Shall Not Fade.

I found myself making tons of music and wondering how to start an album process; something with more concept; a long journey between all the different musical influences in my head. I wanted to try to accomplish something with soul, deepness and an inherent melancholia to it. More organic, more human.
