ivan 'mamão' conti: poison fruit

Francisco Espregueira

From an artist in his seventies, you probably wouldn’t expect to hear an album like this. Coming out next friday, Poison Fruit is Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti - one third of cult Rio jazz-funk trio Azymuth - first solo album in over twenty years, mixing a traditional samba compass with jazz influences and space age electronics. Far Out Recordings is, once again, responsible for sharing the sounds, the rhythms and the invitations to revisit music made a long time ago.

Experimenting and innovating for the last half a century, the brazilian legendary drummer has recently recorded an album with hip hop royalty Madlib - under the shared moniker Jackson Conti -, has been remixed by some of today’s most forward-thinking producers with a penchant for percussion - including IG Culture, the 22a crew, Max Graef and Glenn Astro - and enters 2019 with an incredible fresh-sounding Poison Fruit. On the first LP to be released on vinyl since his 1984 classic The Human Factor, Mamão shares his zany carioca character across eleven tracks of crazy electronic samba and tripped out jazz, beats and dance music. Featuring his Azymuth partners on a number of tracks, he experiments with sounds more commonly associated with house and techno, as an organic legacy of his trademark samba doido sound.

Mamão’s psychoactive Papaya will be available in a few days. He is the maestro on a weird and wonderful stroll through a Brazilian jungle. Deep in a tropical forest, deep at night. Vinyl, CD and Digital purchase options on this one.
