The drummer, producer and rapper Kassa Overall is a name that, somehow, played away from our extended radar. And a what a miss that was. His new album, released in the middle of January, attests a diverse musical identity capable of joining contemporary hip hop with jazz. Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz mixes both in perfect proportions during ten tracks, that impacted us even more when played in a row, as the project unfolded.
Jazz is the mother of hip hop and the mother of so many other genres and sub-genres that is almost impossible to enumerate them. But genuinely great contemporary hip hop and jazz fusion LP's are still relatively rare to find. Especially with such artistry. The New York-based Kassa Overall, together with some well picked guests, has given that block of rare music a fresh sounding boost on this album. The drums are clear and rhythmically astounding, the chords have a very scenic characteristic throughout and the words simply flow on unlimited levels of groove.
