kuna maze: layers
Francisco Espregueira
Brussels-based Kuna Maze, a multi-instrumentalist whose roots run deep in the city's lively jazz-electronic scene, returns with Layers, his second full-length album on Tru Thoughts. After making waves with 2023’s Night Shift, a concept record that explored textures inspired in the nocturnal realm, this new 11-track offering dives into a more layered soundscape. Having shared stages with esteemed producers like Nosaj Thing and Machinedrum, and with radio residencies under his belt, Kuna Maze brings a wealth of experience - embracing a live-driven approach, recording directly with his band in the studio, and capturing the raw energy that fuels his performances.
The title itself hints at the album's intricate construction. Jazz routed, of course, each listen reveals new sonic details, “gradually building a rich, textured sound”. Drawing inspiration from the UK broken-beat jazz scene, Kuna Maze turns to the big “momma” of genres as the foundation to explore different styles, from house to dub, maintaining a cohesive sound while pushing his creative boundaries. "Backlash," one of the focus track, exemplifies this approach, with its pulsating synth creating a blend of nostalgia and forward momentum. Layers is one of the very interesting releases for this upcoming spring. Available on vinyl.
“My aim was to capture the energy and improvisational spirit of live performances, while diving deeper into the jazz influences of my music, all while maintaining the electronic vibe that has always defined my sound”
- Kuna Maze
