lorenzo morresi & le isole: pop flop

Francisco Espregueira

Italian producers Lorenzo Morresi and Luciano Cantone, a.k.a. Le Isole, have come together to create the album Pop Flop, released via Space Echo Records. The album is a unique blend of vintage Italian library music and contemporary musical elements, fusing funk, classical, acid jazz, Afrobeat, and trip hop to create a warm, cinematic sound. The use of vintage Italian synthesizers, such as Farfisa, Crumar, and Elka, which were popular in the 1970s for library music and soundtracks, ends up giving this magnificent record a very unique texture.

Over 10 tracks Lorenzo Morresi and Le Isole pay homage to the past masters of Italian library music, including names such as Umiliani, Tommasi, and Brugnolini. However, the duo has made sure to add their own contemporary musical elements and modern production techniques, creating a sound that is both traditional and innovative. Pop Flop is an example of the recent rediscovery of Italian library music and the passionate record collectors’ market that has arisen around it. With producers like Lorenzo Morresi and Luciano Cantone continuing to pay homage to the past while adding their own contemporary flair, it's exciting to see what new discoveries and musical fusions will arise in the future. Available on vinyl, courtesy of Space Echo Records.

I tried as a form of respect and love to avoid an album that simply imitates those fifty year old masterpieces, so my idea has been to add contemporary musical elements and genres together with modern production techniques to create something original.
