marcus joseph: beyond the dome

Francisco Espregueira

Blowing his alto-saxophone, Marcus Joseph is a very promising jazz artist from Leicester (with Afro-Caribbean roots) presenting his sophomore project released by Jazz re:freshed. Connecting jazz to hip hop and neo soul music with ease, Beyond The Dome is a work that explores themes of personal and external limitations, ideas of what binds us to who and where we are and the transcendence of perceived obstacles to become our authentic selves - everything with a deep spiritual component.

Beyond The Dome features an all star cast of UK jazz luminaries, that help making this album an essential piece of the movement for 2021. Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet, Kokoroko), Nathaniel Cross (trombone, Moses Boyd Exodus), Ife Ogunjobi (trumpet, Ezra Collective), Theon Cross (tuba, Sons of Kemet) and producer Eddie Nache Hick (drums, Sons of Kemet) are just some of talents involved in this magnificent project. In seven smooth compositions Marcus leads the way, touching us with his impressive musicality and with his words of appreciation for life. Jazz re:freshed is, once again, responsible for dropping a work that marks the current state of jazz music. Looking in the past, looking towards the future. Available in vinyl.
