minorinvention: coda ep
Francisco Espregueira
Coming from the acclaimed Detroit Get Down EP, Jon Dixon puts on his minorINVENTION cape to present another EP. Coda just dropped via Dixon’s imprint 4EVR 4WRD, and rotates in highly polished dark textures, fusing lessons learned under Detroit’s God Father of Jazz Marcus Belgrave and Underground Resistance founder Mike Banks.
Over five tracks, Jon Dixon touches on techno and jazz history while bringing in elements he's picked up while being a college music major. He’s a man that understands theory of and styles of each genre, while maintaining a soulful and real approach to this distinctive sound trandemark. In style, he continues to take on the lessons learned from both mentors and push Hi Tech Jazz forward, presenting the second minorINVENTION EP, after Lineage. Coda is available via Bandcamp.
“What made jazz great was the fact that it never stayed the same. It always evolved and morphed. As the times changed, so did the musician. I’ve had so many great teachers and mentors over the years, that I can find myself getting stuck in my own box. So I’ve decided to step back, take a few approaches to music that I’ve forgotten about over the years, and build on these small techniques. Let’s just call them minor inventions.”
