patrick gibin: strength in numbers
Francisco Espregueira
Patrick Gibin, a name synonymous with deep and soulful sounds, has just dropped his debut album, Strength In Numbers, on his own Mother Tongue Records. This release follows a string of acclaimed work for labels like Eglo, Neroli, and Sounds Familiar, marking a significant milestone in Gibin’s career. The album and its name underline the importance of collaboration, featuring a stellar lineup of artists including the legendary Kaidi Tatham, who not only contributes instrumental work on tracks like “Gear Up Rudi!” and “Let It Go” but also lends his rare vocal talents to the title track. This collective spirit extends to contributions from Italian talents Edoardo della Bitta and Alberto Lincetto, who add further depth to the record's rich sonic tapestry.
Strength In Numbers isn't just about collaboration tho; it's a showcase of Gibin’s diverse musical influences. While tracks like “No Matter What” and “Joint Purpose (Alternative Mix)” nod to his early house and acid roots, his love for boogie shines brightly in “Team Spirit” and the captivating “Come Mornin’,” which features the powerhouse vocals of Sandra St. Victor. The album closes with the mellow “In This Together,” a fitting outro that encapsulates the collaborative ethos behind Mother Tongue Records - not only a label, but a store and pressing plant, in other words a meeting point for a huge number of important contemporary works of jazz and jazz-influenced electronic projects. Beyond that, Patrick Gibin delivers an impressive debut that would be a super record in every collection. Available on vinyl.
