ross from friends: family portrait

Francisco Espregueira

After the first project through Brainfeeder - the Aphelion EP -, British producer Ross From Friends (a.k.a. Felix Clary Weatherall) returns with his debut album on Flying Lotus’ label. Family Portrait exposes Felix's inclination to experimentation and his obsessive attention to detail. In twelve tracks, Ross From Friends takes us deeper into his creative-mind, grabbing us track by track. Each of them with different approaches, this is a work of an extremely innovative artist.

Family Portrait is the culmination of almost two years of intense studio time, working 20 hour days, and often spending months perfecting just one aspect of a track. The album also finds Felix exploring his personal space and past. The video of "Pale Blue Dot", shot by his mom in 1990, shows his dad's trip through an Europe that was changing. It was with the emergence of some old family VHS tapes, and the story of how Felix’s parents came to meet, that the true significance of his work became clearer, resulting in the construction of different blocks of influences in one album.

There's probably very few editions of the vinyl format of Family Portrait, released by Brainfeeder. Ross From Friends has been one of the biggest names in the electronic music scene. Always creating, always reinventing his work.
