swarvy: sunny days blue

Francisco Espregueira

Hailing from Los Angeles, Mark Sweeney, a.k.a. Swarvy, has been a prolific producer for the past 10 years, with more than a dozen releases coming out through various labels that make hard to pin his sound into a genre. He is a methodical and precise composer who plays bass, keyboards, drums, and guitar, blending well-known rap and R&B into his own beats, or supplying friends with self-created jazz- and soul-centered arrangements. Sunny Days Blue, that dropped via London-based Black Focus Records, is his biggest leap and is the first time Swarvy has ever sung over his own music.

On the new EP we hear beautiful compositions that don’t run high, but rather stay calmly floating over us, with Swarvy filtering his voice to fit within the instrumentals, which are all in this mid-to-down-tempo and have raw feelings attached to them. Indeed, Sunny Days Blue brings scenes of pastoral space and long drives along the Pacific Coast Highway, perfect for headphones-moments and smoking sessions. For Swarvy, looking back to his work, there’s truly no telling what will come with next. And Sunny Days Blue proves that it really doesn’t matter. Available in vinyl.
