greg paulus & taylor bense: heat makes sense ep

Francisco Espregueira

Brooklyn-based producers Greg Paulus and Taylor Bense collaborate on the Heat Makes Sense EP, released by Freerange Records last friday. Never one to be confined to one genre, Greg takes influence from jazz, funk, hip hop and underground house to form his own sound, primed for discerning dance floors. Taylor Bense is an in-house composer and producer at the highly regarded Hyperballad Studios in Brooklyn, where he works and records a wide spectrum of music for - everything from high end commercial work to EP’s for Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap Records. Recorded and produced at Hyperballad Studios, this four-tracker features three original tracks and a bonus edit by the Martinez Brothers.

The title track, pays homage to Prince with its catchy whistled melody, live bass fills, and raw beats. "Switch" features vocals from Brooklyn MCs Stimulus and Malik Work, complemented by Greg's trumpet and deep pads. "Marino" takes listeners back to the golden era of jacking Chicago house with the added energy of Greg's live trumpet improvisations. Closing the EP, the Martinez Brothers provide an uptempo minimal edit of "Do You Love Me” (originally released in Greg Paulus’ City Movements EP from 2021), maintaining a stripped-back approach that allows the producer’s musical and vocal elements to shine. Overall, the EP showcases the duo's left-field, raw house sound, making it a compelling addition to house aficionados. Available on vinyl.
